Elevator to the Gallows

Elevator to the Gallows ★★★½

Kicking off my Criterion Catch-Up for Cinema Dual with this precursor to the French New Wave. Malle speaks to being indebted to Bresson and Hitchcock for his first narrative feature; although I’m equally unfamiliar with Bresson (something this series will remedy) I can definitely see the Hitchcock shining through. Viciously linear murder gone wrong for a pie of lovers, gorgeously shot in extra grainy B&W…good way to kick off a new series and a new year.
