Roger Deakins can do no wrong. There are some truly spectacular sequences in this and, for the most part, acting as well. However, I didn’t quite get that same “holy shit this is harrowing” feeling that I got with Saving Private Ryan. I know it’s not the same, but if hard not to compare the two.

    Pleasantly surprised by this.

  • Hereditary

    This movie.

When I heard that a slow burn horror movie by A24 was coming out I did everything to try and avoid spoilers, and I’m glad I did.

Hereditary brings what the horror genre has grossly been missing over the last decade or two. Monsters or ‘The First Purge’ aren’t scary. You know what’s scary? Grief, loss, indifference, lonelyness. Not since Requiem have my eyes watered (not crying but actually watered) from how unnerving and uncomfortable some scenes were…

    Only the Brave

Skipped this at the theater because it looked like another run of the mill movie about a recent tragedy. Then, right after hitting play on my remote and seeing that Joseph Kosinski had directed it, it had my full attention. By all accounts this movie should be awful, play by all the rules and end on a quiet note. It, however, surpassed all expectations. Two misty eyes out of two.

Confirming that on my second viewing that I still think that the trash scene could have been 15 minutes shorter.

    Also, I live Roger Deakins.

  • Columbus

Quiet, intimate character study on loss and moving on that just so happens to be lensed beautifully.
