    The 3 Penny Opera


    As this is a GW Pabst film, the acting is on point, and the camerawork / lighting are great. But this fails as an adaptation of The Threepenny Opera. Many cheesy, Hollywoodesque characters and situations which depart too significantly from the play and it’s meaning.  The ironic happy ending of the play loses its irony and is made to be too straightforward.

    An immersive experience, a technical marvel.  The cinematography and digital one-take trickery are nearly flawless, with multiple memorable sequences which rival the visuals of Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket. Despite the comparisons to those films, do not expect any kind of subversive or challenging message- 1917 is more Nolan than Kubrick. While the writing of action scenes is phenomenal, the dialogue is often quite on-the-nose, explaining too much for the audience’s sake. Like Dunkirk, there is little to nothing here…

    Tarantino’s heart palpably reaches out here, which I never thought I could say, especially after The Hateful Eight. This is Tarantino’s take on Slow Cinema, on the essay film, with little to no elements of pastiche and a surprising amount of heart and sincerity. You have to wait for it, but what you ultimately get is a love letter to cinema and it’s further capabilities. Even while you’re waiting- the script is amazing, acting impeccable, and it’s filled with subtle references…
