    During the 1972 presidential election, my kindergarten teacher created a mock voting booth and had the students vote on Election Day. The voting sheet showed a photo of the two candidates and their names: Richard Nixon and George McGovern. Because I was a kindergartener and didn't know much about anything—least of all, politics—I made my choice for president based on the photo. I voted for Richard Milhouse Nixon.

    Oops! I picked a second film from Senegal for the challenge. I didn't mean to repeat a country, but I was well into this film before I realized my mistake.

    Touki Bouki seems to get its sensibility from the French New Wave. If the cast had been all white people, I would have guessed that I was watching a Godard film.
