The American Friend

The American Friend ★★★★½

Deeply complex tale of moral deterioration and questions of who truly is responsible - the puppet or the puppeteer. Reminiscent of noir elements, beautiful cinematography and excellent acting breathe life into the calm but emotionally edgy film. There were some masterfully tense scenes that films that call themselves "thrillers" would love to have.

If you enjoy existential dramas like those by Robert Bresson, there is no reason not to like The American Friend.
