Mary Conti’s review published on Letterboxd:
I feel like a terrible and inconsistent person for not buying into Grave of the Fireflies. I often make the argument on behalf of the value of sentimentality, and yet I could not accept the sentimental story of the admittedly well made Grave of the Fireflies.
It's definitely a beautifully drawn (even in its more shadowy areas) animated film and I find few actual narrative faults within the film's story, but the film is so willfully content in depicting these two siblings suffering that although I did feel sad and depressed, it was not nearly comparable to the amount of emotions I have experienced in other films that have made me weep. It was an extremely passive experience.
This of course does not stop Grave of the Fireflies from being a strong film, but it's a strong film that ultimately could not win me over completely.
