Ethan Colburn’s review published on Letterboxd:
A masterful noir, Billy Wilder executes Chandler’s writing perfectly. The movie is SO FUN!
From Barbra Stanwyck‘a entrance down the stairs to Edward G Robinson’s monologues, this movie is literally flawless. I’m obsessed with Raymond Chandler’s writing. He’s so snappy, I wish I lived in a world where everyone talked like that. Fred MacMurray’s delivery pairs perfectly with the writing as well.
Ultimately what makes this movie great is the constant tension, whether it be will they fall in love or can they get away with it, you’re always on the edge of your seat. The tropes of the film noir genre never worked so well, from the femme fatale to the crime itself.
