Jojo Rabbit

Jojo Rabbit ★★★★

"There are no weak Jews. I am descended from those who wrestle angels and kill giants. We were chosen by God. You were chosen by a fat man with greasy hair and half a moustache."

Taika Waititi's timely jab at the absurdity of fascism and nationalist fervour possesses a crucial streak of humanism that makes its awkward third act transition from black comedy to sentiment forgivable. Besides which, the closing sequence performed to the strains of David Bowie's Heroes is a pure masterstroke.

Despite the high-profile casting of Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell, it's the hitherto-unknown Roman Griffin Davis and Thomasin McKenzie who both steal the limelight here.
