Opera ★★★★

Opera is arguably Dario Argento's last great movie. With its lavish sets and bravura camerawork, it's his most visually striking since Suspiria. It's also one of his most brutal, at times to the point of torture porn (those squeamish about either scissors or eye trauma need not apply). However, the more violent moments are counterbalanced by some effective episodes of suspense, plus an exhilarating sequence involving crows being set loose within the interior of a huge opera house.

If it weren't for the slightly anticlimactic ending and disappointingly forgettable score (credited to Brian Eno, Roger Eno, Steel Grave, Claudio Simonetti and Bill Wyman), this might even have been the director's best film full stop.
