Reservoir Dogs

Reservoir Dogs ★★★★

"I got Madonna's big dick coming out of my left ear, and Toby the Jap... I don't know what - comin' out of my right."

It's the movie that started it all for Quentin Tarantino. It proved that it was possible to make a heist movie without showing the actual robbery. It rejuvenated Harvey Keitel's career. It enshrined Steve Buscemi as one of America's most recognisable character actors. It gave us umpteen pieces of eternally quotable dialogue. It ensured that the 1973 hit Stuck in the Middle with You by Stealers Wheel became forever associated with ear-chopping.

While Tarantino has done better since and there's a bit too much in the way of racist dialogue for comfort, it's still a helluva debut. The flashback structure is tight and easy to follow, the characters are finely drawn, the violence is genuinely shocking and the black humour is often hilarious.
