There are movies like The Pursuit of Happyness, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, Grave of the Fireflies and Shoplifters that highlight the beauty and strength of the human spirit and family bonds in the face of the injustice of poverty.
...and then there's Into the Wild aka "my days were more exciting when I was penniless" .
I can see why people like this story, I really do. But all I could see was the entitled privilege of its main character.
