Any fan of Apichatpong Weerasethekul or Spring, Summer, Winter Fall, and...Spring needs to watch this film. The fact that it was released in 1989 is surprising as its pacing, music, and imagery all seem at home with more contemporary avant-garde mise-en-scène. Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East? should be more often considered in the pantheon of Buddhist cinema as a benchmark of Buddhist expression.
