  Lester’s raggedy style undercuts the tightness of the farce (and the jokes) at every turn. Wouldn’t be hard to make a better cinematic adaptation, but at this point the only person I could imagine trying would be Seth MacFarlane. Which would not be my choice, thank you very much. More eunuch jokes than I remember.

  At this point a good deal of the fun is watching the actors hovering this close to losing it. Some of these takes are pretty long, and you can feel that highwire tension in the room.

  Still kind of unbelievable how good these performances are. Wilder of course but also Kahn? Mars? Leachman? The precision is astonishing.
