I feel like I just stepped away from a deeply spiritual experience.
Nothing is as thrilling as a body of work so disinterested in being “cool” that it becomes one of the coolest things you’ve ever seen. Hyperactive, no, more accurately, the cinematic equivalent to the hyperpop music genre. Flamboyant, explosive, otherworldly! Adjective after adjective can be hurled at Moulin Rouge! and it’ll incorporate it effortlessly and with more splendor than you can even imagine.
I cried, I enjoyed the musical numbers, I was swept up in the delirious joy that comes with finding love, and I succumbed to the utter tragedy of it all. Baz Lehrmann nails it once again. No one makes living look as fantastically tantalizing as Baz.
