Picnic ★★★★★

Tho the scoring is just preposterous (loud melodramatic swells over nothing...it really dates the film) ... I’m here for that end of summer/Labor Day melancholy...Those lanterns as the stars dance to “Moonglow” ...every Susan Strasburg scene ...every Rosalind Russell scene...and the 1950s American small town full of repression of unhappiness. A time capsule of its decade (and glorious widescreen to boot).
