My expectations of this were totally off. All I knew was that it was the same director as Head and comes in the same Criterion box set as Easy Rider, so I was expecting some wild hippie shit. Instead, I got a powerful drama about alienation and purpose. Easy to see why this was the role that made Nicholson a star, he's perfect as the charming, emotionally abusive, self-loathing asshole who still makes you root for him somehow. Whole cast was great, especially the lesbian hitchhikers.

"A conspiracy of dentists?"
"As long as you're going to kill me, why not be open and frank with me, huh?"
Not sure what to make of the race and gender politics of this, but as a film it's delightful. I loved the unconventional editing and cinematography. But the highlight is definitely Yaphet Kotto's unsettling charisma. His ability to turn his charm on and off makes for a wonderful tension throughout the film. Still not sure how I feel about the ending, other than confused.

"That ain't no way to treat your wife, buddy. I don't care what she's done."
"Have you ever done this before?"
"I don't know. Have you?""Silencio."
It feels silly to say something like "Lynch's masterpiece" because he has so many masterpieces. But this is the one I'd start people on to get into his style. Harring is devastating and hypnotic, and Watts has such a compelling naivete and vulnerability. They both should have won Oscars.
