    The Big Short

The Big Short is undeniably messy and complicated and the second half of the picture blasts us with information that someone dumb like myself can’t possibly comprehend but it’s still a madcap, frenetic and enjoyable experience with an outstanding ensemble featuring probably Christian Bale’s best performance to date. Although it’s far from a perfect picture The Big Short really is a lot more watchable than a film about tranches and Synthetic CDO’ s has any reason to be. So well played Mr Adam McKay.

    La La Land

La La Land is one of the most visually beautiful films ever made and there’s no doubt Director Damien Chazelle has done an outstanding job but the musical numbers do feel quite intrusive and the narrative’s dismissive attitude to every character except the two leads threw me out of the story quite a bit. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone though fine in their own right for me didn’t really have an enormous amount of chemistry either. Still though I’m glad I watched LLL as it’s a relatively lively and enjoyable experience with an excellent soundtrack.

    Get Out

Get Out is a bizarre mash-up of Rosemary’s Baby, The Stepford Wives and The Wicker Man that thanks to Jordan Peele’s bitingly witty social commentary and Daniel Kaluuya’s captivating leading performance manages to somehow tread exciting new ground in its genre.

Although not all of the elements came together for me (the TSA agent bordered too much on obvious comic relief) for the most part Get Out is a thrilling and fiercely intelligent film.

Indeed, hopefully Get Out’s success with the Oscars will lead to studios having more confidence in the talents of minority filmmakers.
