Jokes aside, on a second viewing, it really hit me how the relationship dynamics worked. Just the last lingering shot of Reynolds in Alma's lap... Just like a baby... He loves her as he did his mother. In the New Years Eve scene, it's heartbreaking to see him cry and chase and search desperately after her like a lost child looking for his mother. In these types of December-May relationships, you usually see the young girl dependent on the older man. It's refreshing to finally see a role reversal.
