there’s this good quote in the bible about how you can’t serve two masters, how if you try, you’ll love one and hate the other. those words haven’t rung more true than for this bloated mess of an adaptation. it’s fit with the aesthetics of the original film but tries too hard to sticks to kings idiosyncrasies, which doesn’t work at all because of how opposite king and kubrick are in terms of how they tackle material. flanagan is a very solid craftsman and some bits of this do work, but those are the only bits where flanagan is doing his own thing. the final stretch blows. disappointed.
