Been itching to watch this again because it’s so unique and just gets better every time. It’s Disney’s most anarchic movie by a mile, one that is in constant dialogue with the film medium, as if it’s an investigative reporter. It’s all quite beautiful from its reminder that verisimilitude is mere appearance to its insistence that geography and all the differences between people are just an illusion, as if movie magic. It really has a true appreciation of the learning of…

Always a good day when you get to watch the best movie ever made.

I’ll sidestep most of the talking points about how it’s the peak state of digital photorealistic expressionism despite being only a toddler historically (Mann’s previous film Collateral was essentially the first). Back on my Kurosawa grind, and not with my favorite of his as this seemed mired in nihilistic capitalism without much more purpose than to illustrate that which it’s mired within. Still have to admit the ending, with its abruptness and it’s brevity, really worked. The problem is that it’s in opposition to the languid 2+ hours that preceded it. Ultimately my takeaway is that I love Kurosawa when he directs slimmer scripts, but is wordier scripts are pretty tough to get through, even if they offer rewards of their own.

Looks every bit as gorgeous as a movie that nearly bankrupted the Mouse should. I don’t think the story packs quite the same punch as the animators, but even still there are like 27 great characters and a kids movie with this much human trafficking is a something worthy of attention.

After you catch your breath, you realize that you've just witnessed a subversively existential statement dressed in goth-metal design and attitude.

Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem

This small courtroom drama shouldn't be so thrilling. This melodrama shouldn't be so moving. This social statement shouldn't be so provocative. However with a tight, nuanced script, great, subtle yet huge performances, and a hardcore, very effective directorial commitment to POV shots, this becomes all of that and more.
