Waves ★★★★½

Every year there seems to be one film everyone seems to think is mediocre or average that I am astounded by. In 2018 it was Mid 90s, 2017 A Ghost Story and last year it is Waves. I enjoyed Shults previous two films Krisha and It Comes At Night, but I am totally floored with his new releases. Firmly establishes Trey as one of the most talented up and comers as far as I'm concerned. I really do feel like this is A24's Magnolia. A masterfully told story of what it means to love in a world drowning in hate. Expertly crafted phenomenally shot and soulfully acted. I see that the biggest criticism seems to revolve around the tonal shift in the second half, but I would argue that the split is needed to fully drive it's positive heartfelt message home. This is a very special movie and I wish it had received more attention and acclaim. Feel really bad about not supporting this in the theaters but I will absolutely be picking this up on Blu-ray.
