Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ★★★½

"I love those moments. I like to wave at them as they pass by."

narratively some kind of cumbersome riddle, but so packed with non-sequitur incident and broad humor that it almost resembles INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM. pretty much one damn thing after another. kind of a watershed for modern CGI, with a lot of really seamless integration of performance capture, pure animation, and elaborate practical sets. Davy Jones smoking a pipe in the rain or, in probably my favorite moment of the film, Sparrow charging into the Kraken's mouth, are as purely iconic images as this stuff ever managed. Bill Nighy is terrific in this and Orlando Bloom is thankfully not in it all that much.
