violent and unsettling giallo-style psych-out but, you know, for kids. young Sayuri gets picked up from an orphanage by a man claiming to be her long-lost father and taken home to her supposedly amnesiac mother, and a disfigured "sister" she never knew she had. some seriously nasty imagery here: a child's doll come to life only to be brutally murdered by a fanged, rotting corpse; an omnious vat of acid in the basement surrounded by cages full of poisonous animals; giant spiders; a masked witch haunting the attic. all of it is roped together in hypno-spiral nightmares freaky enough for any adult. show it to a little kid, though, and see the birth of permanent, diagnosable anxiety disorder. fucked up in the best way.
