    Joe Versus The Volcano is easily the best of the Hanks/Ryan romcoms (also the funniest and smartest too).     I gotta say, I really don't see why this is seen as being, I dunno, middling or merely okay. I thought this was multifaceted, beautiful, sad, beguiling - classic Lean, basically. So sure, it takes a little while, more than an hour, for the actual plot itself to get going, but everything prior to that is utterly essential to provide the audience with a chance to really get to know the characters rather than just understanding the whos, wheres, whats…
