It took me a while to get around to watching this film because a friend of mine had spoiled the twist. Only, once I watched it, the twist they told me was not what actually happened in the film. So... I feel as though I too am going mad.
That being said, The Lighthouse is much much better than the other Lighthouse film I watched. The hallucination scenes here are so much more fascinating than those in the other film, and the cinematography of the 1:1 black and white is striking. The dialogue is archaic and compelling.
The audio design only benefits the film further and the droning foghorn brings feelings of David Lynch's Twin Peaks: The Return. Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson give stellar performances that have been described as career defining. I disagree with going that far, but they are juggernaut performances to be sure.
