One of the best films I have seen in a very, very, VERY long time. Wildly inventive, with earned stakes and astounding range by Michelle Yeoh. A deeply dark comedy that also manages to be the most inventive sci-fi and adventure movie in years. Propulsive, adventurous, absurd, hilarious, and possessing deep emotional stakes, this movie manages to a half dozen things incredibly well and weave them together with a deft and ease that is breathlessly exciting.

    I haven't seen a…

Criterion Challenge 2022: 1980s - Absolutely fascinating pseudo bio pic, narrative tale of a controversial author/actor/director and political activist. Blurring the lines between fact, fiction and narrative path, this movie is quite unlike anything I have seen. The movie interweaves things from Mishima’s actual life with dramatizations of three of his books, weaving a stylish and sometimes violent story together that hits differently then anything I can think of. It might be one of the most compelling films of a…

    Kill Bill (1973)
No, but seriously folks. One of the better revenge thrillers I’ve ever seen. Some of the effects don’t hold up, but as a film it does almost everything you want it to do and the action is first rate. Additionally, young Meiko kaji could get it.

Top tier revenge movie. And yes, Kill Bill (which I like very much) basically owes it’s heart and soul, and quite a few visuals to this excellent manga adaptation.

Alex Garland’s STALKER, ALIENS, JURASSIC PARK and THE ABYSS mash up. If that sounds like it is for you, dive in. I really enjoyed it and found the visuals breathtaking. Great performances, and a genuinely nuts last 25 minutes or so. This isn’t the kind of movie for everybody, but I appreciate the huge swings it took.  Old and beautiful, the few times it gets predictable and wanders into used tropes were forgivable to me, because the world building was intense, vital and interesting.

Genuinely unique and interesting film, I shouldn’t have waited so long to watch it.

I have a friend who a mutual friend once termed as a "sketchy little guy", that isn't necessarily the case with Cooper Hoffman's Gary Valentine, but the "sketchy little guy" had the same enthusiasm for alternative income streams, things that walk right up to looking like scams and other such things.

Anyway, his is both a classic low to mid stakes 70s comedy, and a strange somewhat inappropriate love story. It actually captures the weird sense of adventure and ennui…

ESSENTIAL ! Must watch 5 star documentary, you don’t need to know anything about the band to love it either. A story about perseverance, creative vision and obstinate endurance. It is exactly as long as it needs to be. A far too clever pair of brothers and a musical legacy that ensures them their place of being “Your favorite band’s favorite band.”

Edgar Wright’s expert direction makes the ride far more vital than your average Sugarman. Don’t put this film…
