I’ve watched a handful of the classic Kurosawa samurai films. They’re quality cinema and I would recommend them to anyone truly serious about film. That said, none of his works, not even Seven Samurai, have quite left me as utterly speechless as this masterpiece. Everything about this film’s execution is as close to flawless as one can achieve, and what makes it rise above others with similarly superb cinematography, acting and story is the greater implications of the events that unfold and the daring flaws in a seemingly ironclad code it reveals. Harakiri twists the ideals of honor and duty into forms beyond recognition in front of our eyes, and through this lens comes a spellbinding work of art.
