  • Spider-Man: Far from Home

    Spider-Man: Far from Home

    ★★½

Spider-Man: Far From Home has the Iron Man 3 problem—you can't pull off a twist ending when your initial premise has more interesting (albeit unexplored) implications than the reveal does. They walk it back, but still push most of the interesting questions back to later sequels.

  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi

    Star Wars: The Last Jedi

    ★★½

Star Wars Ep. 8 is a wildly inconsistent follow-up to TFA that stuns with the occasional jaw-dropping setpiece, yet utterly fails to deliver on the promise of the stories TFA teased. Nobody feels like they're actually acting out the will of their character (vs. serving the plot).

  • The Lego Batman Movie

    The Lego Batman Movie

    ★★½

Didn't enjoy this as much as 'The Lego Movie', despite being more excited for this one. Humor doesn't hit as often, collapses under own weight (large cast, mostly ignored, characters that are the focus are almost entirely flat). The direction and writing influences of Lord and Miller are sorely missed.

  • Wonder Woman

    Wonder Woman

    ★★½

❤️ Gal Gadot, Robin Wright. Biggest flaw: Some interesting ideas about Ares/WWI get thrown around then immediately invalidated.

  • Kingsman: The Golden Circle

    Kingsman: The Golden Circle

    ★★½

Very enjoyable moments, some major theme/plot problems, but has enough flair and silliness to be worth your time if you like the first one.

  • Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

    ★★½

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Review withheld until the incredibly underwhelming cliffhanger is paid-off or left in the wrong boat cabin and picked up by a different screenwriter. That said, Depp's speech about Wizards coming together to prevent WWII had me completely sold, even after he very explicitly kills a toddler earlier in the film. That guy can really act when he wants to.
