A Nightmare on Elm Street

A Nightmare on Elm Street ★★★

This does a good job toeing the line of wonder-driven suspense without becoming too silly. The more fantastical scenes are brief enough and plausible enough (within the confines of the film's logic and defined science fiction boundaries) to be horrifying without resorting to cheaper tactics—a girl floating in the air while being slashed by an invisible attacker doesn't overstay her welcome. Freddy Krueger makes a good villain because he appeals to the area of everyday (everynight?) life that poses the greatest immediate perceived risk to us.
