Eighth Grade ★★

There are some good scenes here—I like the parts where Kayla braves the awkward pool party and stumblingly hits on her crush during class—but for most of Eighth Grade, I was wondering why Bo Burnham seems to have no idea how people actually talk or interact. It often feels like a Disney Channel movie filtered through the A24 millennial-prestige style, with the characters' schmaltzy and uninteresting dialogue turned up to unrealistic registers that create artificial tension.
