Hereditary ★★

Hereditary is prestige horror at its least interesting, the sense of dread being created through all of the usual ways: deadpan performances; subdued, high-contrast lighting; generic haunting music; slowly developed, inane plot points; etc. Ari Aster seems to have no real ideas and not too much ingenuity behind developing these non-ideas, and even though some of the shocks here can be somewhat scary, I was more overwhelmed with a sense of boredom. Toni Collette was fine, but her actorly quirks are nothing to write home about.
