    The French Connection

Half watched a putlocker stream of this on my tiny laptop while working the final two hours of a quiet shift between midnight and 2am. 10/10 wouldn't change a thing. still holds up.

    The Skin I Live In

I don't know why I give Almodovar literally all the leeway to mess around with the most sensitive issues using his entire bag of shocks, melodrama, and contrivances. But I sure do! Everything is done with such skill while also being so explicit and fucked up. It dives head first into gender and body issues and does this with a lot of psychological and body horror?!? No one could describe this as tasteful, except for the unreal furnishings in Banderas'…

    Strange Days

So many things work here and I'm always hopelessly on board with a cyberpunk aesthetic. So much can rightly be said about the cool visuals - feels like half the scenes have 200 extras, each one doing something unique and interesting - but the script is terrific, gripping noir that doesn't ignore plotting in its exploration of a near-future sci-fi world where the chaos of the kink-friendly club is a respite from the constant rioting happening on the streets.

    Paths of Glory

Hard to imagine a greater anti-war movie than this. A burning rage verging on disgust permeates throughout and is directed at all the right targets. Macready is beyond odious in the best version of that character we've ever seen. How can you not be cynical about war

    Top Gun: Maverick

Maverick's two flaws are that he's a maverick and cares too much about his dead friend's son.

I dunno if propaganda works but Tom Cruise has saved movies and I'm going to join the US military.

Classic boy meets girl romance combined with complex family drama. Liked it a lot.

You can almost see smoke coming off Marlene in the famous vaudeville scene and her performance is the undoubted highlight, even if her character feels hard done by as the film progresses. Given the mystique of her introduction, you expect a more interesting arc than the one she's eventually given but I suppose this was still 1930. Gary Cooper is so not her equal. He's almost absurdly tall with his long legs and arms, accentuated by his legionnaires uniform, that…
