Doctor Sleep 2019
Well, I went in ready to tear my hair out and that didn't happen so I guess I'm pleasantly surprised. The second act and its focus on the world it established was the closest this movie got to being an engaging film and even then, ehhhh. So the fact that this is a sequel to the shining - Kubrick's Shining - and not an adaptation of the novel, is the biggest misstep. This film has none of the tone, atmosphere,…

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2019
A few well thought out set pieces - the one with the hallways way genuinely great - but too many of the spooky scenes are too conventional and held back by the pg-13 rating which it feels like it was already pushing. The scenes connecting the spooky scenes called the story was just so unengaging and typical. I could see the potential but when that potential is squandered on this far too traditional American 2010's horror film.

Southland Tales 2006
I’ve been trying to put this (and a few other movies) into words for a while and every time I can’t do it. So let me try being brief. Performances are so bad, they blend and work for the story kind of. Sean Willian Scott was surprisingly good and the movie is best when he’s on screen. The visual look is garbage and that’s probably the biggest problem. The production and look of the film is pretty terrible with a…

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile 2019
Both Efron and Collins do a good job, but that’s about all the film has. The perspective of the film is unique, I think the choice to stay so closely attached to Collins character was a double edged sword though. Sure it’s a unique perspective, but I just didn’t know what I was supposed to feel in relation to the fact that we all know the man was crazy.
The biggest issue with this movie is just the screenplay. It’s…

Vice 2018
For a movie I care so little about, to the point I forgot I watched it last week, I found my notes and had a bunch to say. Starting off with a hot take, Cristian Bale wasn’t that good. He was fine, it felt like Dick Cheney I guess, but there was nothing about his performance that actually made me go “wow that Cristian Bale deserves an Oscar”.
Really quick, a brief talk about 9/11. The presentation of 9/11 is…

Bohemian Rhapsody 2018
Oh boy did the editing live up to the hype. I’ve had a really hard time with this film, trying to remain objective and separating art from the artist is something I believe in, but I could not with this film. Getting the Bryan Singer stuff out of the way, I hate that this is something I have to mention, but it is absolutely impossible not to think about Bryan singer, and how he clearly identified with Freddie Mercury. This…

Halloween 2018
How embarrassing. I spent the majority of this movie either frustrated with the internal logic or laughing hysterically at the script, that somehow made it past so many people. All the moments where they call back to the original are just plain laughable. Other moments are also supposed to be subversive and end up being even more embarrassing. When Michael looks over the edge and Laurie was gone, it was just plain stupid.
Almost every aspect of the writing in…
