    The Power of the Dog

Jonny Greenwood really is the best part of at least two pretty darn good movies this year.

  • The Fly

    The Fly

While this was gross and pretty darn good, it feels like this gets progressively less engaging as it goes along. The first act is really strong, but by the time the second act is in motion and Seth starts to change, things start to get repeditive. And by the time we're in the third act and Seth is full fly-man, the repetition of Seth saying to "never come back" just really got old. The last fifteen minutes definitely picked things…

  • Petite Maman

    Petite Maman

In theory, I love what this film is doing. The exploration of memory and the past and past memories that aren't even yours, should be right up my alley. But something about the execution just didn't quite click for me on first watch. While it really is very elgant in how it brings up these subjects, I feel like I was left wanting more from this aspect of the film narratively. Its fine that its a very loose film, but…

  • Tony Manero

    Tony Manero

This is a really interesting film that doesn't just doesn't really reach what it feels like it could. For one, scene length is an issue and really drags down the pace. The dialogue is either not tight enough or not fully comitting to a more "realistic" slice of life progression of conversation. It's just uneven. This in tandem with some pretty aggredous sound effects and mixing constitutes the majority of where I got really pulled out of the movie. This…

  • Leaving Las Vegas

    Leaving Las Vegas

Something about the glorification of self-destruction in this movie is super hard to pin down. It's undoubtably authentic and emotionally engaging but it is without a doubt making alcoholism, suicide, and self-destruction really attractive in a very weird way.

  • The Green Knight

    The Green Knight

First time back to the theater since Rise of Skywalker and I think the projector bulb was dim. I get the shadows but why were the highlights so grimy? Why did the focus look soft?

  • Nymphomaniac: Vol. I

    Nymphomaniac: Vol. I

On its own, Nymphomaiac Vol. 1 is not the best Von Trier has done. Despite prefering the theatrical cut of this film, I tend to watch the extended cut. As one film, it does a really good job establishing Joe. She's a really dense literary character, despite most of her depth showing in Vol. 2.

Vol. 1 also doesn't feel like it fully exploits the essayistic style that Von Trier has been using since. I mean, as a whole, Seligman…

  • Minari

I really like the music but a lot of it reminds me of the main theme from Cannibal Holocaust and thats a weird movie to be thinking of while watching this.

Good first act, decent second act, great third act. The third act really begins developing the themes that were established in the first act. Its a bummer so much of the films early momentum is lost by the thirty minute mark.

The ending is very odd in just how…
