Formulaic, thoroughly entertaining summer military propaganda / thrill ride that pays enough homage for fan service without being forced or awkward about it. Tepid attempt to improving diversity of cast, though production quality done remarkably well that I suspect it will age rather gracefully.

men will go four layers deep into their subconscious before going to therapy

(With some distance from the awe of first viewings, the dialogue is trite, feels more sophomoric over later Nolan films. But damn if the concept still isn’t excellent.)

My favorite of Hustwit’s films (I wasn’t a big fan of Helvetica) because he finally puts the spotlight on people, for which design is both by and for, instead of concepts and helps illuminate their personalities, motivations, idiosyncrasies. I just wish Hustwit let a little more innate curiosity drive the narrative—sometimes, and especially with Helvetica, he seems motivated to create a film because he likes the topic, not because he wants to understand it—but perhaps that’s okay?

You cannot wipe the smile off of my face when watching this movie. Unbridled fun.
