Dolemite Is My Name is such an uplifting and captivating film. Featuring Eddie Murphy in his best performance since forever, as well as Da'Vine Joy Randolph in a joyful and dedicated debut and Wesley Snipes in a scene-stealing supporting turn, this film checks all the boxes and turns a premise that was already interesting to begin with into something that completely captures the audience's interest.
Granted, I'm personally not very well-informed about the history of blaxpoitation films, and my knowledge of Rudy Ray Moore's achievements can basically be summed up by saying that I know he did some movies as a character called Dolemite. As a result, I was pleasantly surprised by how vibrant and lovely this was: at a full two hours, it never misses a single beat, features engaging editing choices, great costume designs and a wonderful soundtrack.
Not sure if it ranks up there with the best of 2019 for me, but it's a very solid movie that I will be remembering fondly.
