Gary Kline’s review published on Letterboxd:
Another re-watch in the run up to Kong vs. Godzilla.
I loved this in the theater and picked up the 4K HDR disc a while back but hadn't rewatched.
What an absolute banger. From Kong's introduction in the prologue, to the helicopter encounter when the gang arrives on skull island, to the climactic battle with the skull crawlers this thing just is full of epic, well shot and staged kaiju action.
I love all the actors in this one and while the characters are pretty 2 dimensional, it still works and Brie Larson and Tom Hiddleston have charisma to burn even if they don't have a whole lot to do.
I loved the scene with the giant spider and stick bug. I'm just bummed we didn't get to see those big ants that sound like birds.
Sure the Vietnam music cues are a bit trite, but the early 70s setting helped explain Sam Jackson's motivation to go after Kong and the lack of better weapons and technology.
Kong is King indeed.
