CozyRy’s review published on Letterboxd:
For fans of Evil Dead, plus more foreign sensibilities, look no further. Soviet Russia’s first horror film adapted from the same novel as Mario Bava’s Black Sunday, called Viy. I’m not much of a fan as the aforementioned Evil Dead, because I haven’t found myself entranced by this hokey and silliness that tends to be a main draw for audiences. The English dubs that come stock for the stream on Shudder aid to this goofiness maybe even more than intended, and just serve to detract me more. To the films detriment, the plot focuses too much on Khoma with little to no resolve. It’s apparent what will come, and even at 77 minutes it’s a slow walk to get there. Some interesting set pieces and just a great poster to lure curious viewers in aside, this did not work for me.
