    I keep seeing the word "lovely" when others describe the film Brooklyn, and while this word is often overused, it is a perfect description. Brooklyn is, in all ways, lovely. It is beautifully shot. One of my favorite moments is when Eilis gets through the line on Ellis Island and opens the door to her new world. The light coming through that doorway is luminous and filled with hope for a better future.

    Winter's Bone


    I live in an area where you can get on a rural highway and drive 30-40 miles in any direction and find small shadow communities similar to the one depicted in Winter's Bone. Obviously, there is a story to tell and the writers tweak certain things in the language and characterizations to generate suspense, but this movie feels real. Authentic.

    Jennifer Lawrence is outstanding and Dale Dickey gives a performance that makes you yearn for a whole movie about her. But John Hawkes steals the show. You can't take your eyes off of him in any scene that he is in.
