Solid little horror thriller that is sort of Cast Away meets The Creature From The Black Lagoon. Very few missteps, just confident storytelling. The reveal of the creature is something special.

  • Rabid

A different beast than the original, embracing the mainstream, cultivating more obvious analogies. It's smart and ruthless and angry and bloody. A bit overlong, so it loses its focus here and there. Still, good stuff from The Twins.

    Provocative but somewhat muddled.

Phoenix is magnetic. The score irritates and intrudes instead of compliments. It confuses an aesthetic borrowed from better 70's films (*ahem* Taxi Driver) with profundity.

Most problematic, though, is that the film doesn't seem to know what it is saying about violence as a reaction to an unjust society. Does it condone what occurs? Are we to sympathize with Arthur Fleck? What does that say about us? The film stumbles into provoking these questions while giddily setting up the next sad, inevitable tragedy.

Worth watching for Phoenix, and the discussions it will certainly stimulate, but doesn't really have anything to say.

Absolutely bugnuts premise is somewhat tempered by derivative moments, but film keeps finding one more thing to throw at the viewer. You've seen it all before, but not quite like this. B-movie connoisseurs should eat this up. Trenchard-Smith strikes again!
