Commando 1985
“Don’t deprive yourself of some pleasure…”
90 minutes WITH credits. Ruthlessly economic. Never once slows down to tell you more than you need to know. No trauma dump about what happened to his unit or Jenny’s mom; when things seem hopeless, Rae Dawn Chong shows up with a rocket launcher to blast a hole in a paddy wagon so the movie can keep going. Not an ounce of fat or irony, just pure maximalist entertainment.

Godzilla Minus One 2023
Slightly refocuses the original’s central metaphor to serve more as an exploration of collective guilt than collective trauma. It’s incredible to see modern filmmakers still finding new ways to interpret and deepen these ideas. It reminds me of Spielberg’s War of the Worlds in how drastically it expands the original’s palette while still coloring within the same basic lines. Thrilling, awe-inspiring and deeply human, it’s everything a Godzilla movie should be.

Killers of the Flower Moon 2023
Screamed out, “I didn’t know they stacked shit that high!” when Leo showed up onscreen and the IMAX audience lost it, burst into laughter and scattered applause before carrying me out of the theater on their shoulders. They had to restart the movie once everyone settled back down.
