"My journey into eternity mustn't grow distasteful."
Rewatch Review: One of my all time favorite films, and certainly one of the greatest ever made, Masaki Kobayashi's 'Harakiri' is truly one of the most masterfully shot and edited films in existence, dripping in tension, detail, incredible cinematography and lighting, and featuring a story full of hairpin turns and twists that further heighten the stakes and danger that's omnipresent, even when it's not apparent. As the intensity boils further and further with new revelations that are made, the proceedings explode in frenetic violence that's craved; a means to an end. It's a sweet tale of revenge that's muddied by themes of hypocrisy and honor, expertly so, and I scarcely have seen productions where literally every aspect is packed with professionalism and expertise. This is a truly perfect film.
