One of my most anticipated movies in a long time, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm was one of the only good surprises in 2020 but I was just hoping it wasn’t only a gimmick and that it could compare to the greatness of the first film. This sequel brings the same humour but this time it’s much more timely as it heavily relies on jokes regarding the upcoming election as well as other 2020 specific things so it might not hold up as well as the original. Watching it today though, it’s still hilarious and shocking just like the first, the film starts off with a barrage of jokes and finishes with some crazy stuff as well, resulting in a very funny comedy and one of the best comedies I’ve seen in a while. Sacha Baron Cohen easily slides back into his famous role and is able to make it funny without feeling too forced, the story is much different this time around as he includes a daughter for his character. It’s a pretty good addition for the most part but some of the scripted scenes between the two are weaker in comparison to the scenes with real people. It has a heartwarming nature I wasn’t expecting that I actually enjoyed and it’s clear this time around the jokes are more targeted towards a specific group which isn’t always my favourite thing but I think it works here. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is a bright spot in a year where film has been hit hard, it’s a very welcome adventure with one of my favourite characters of all-time and I vastly enjoyed it. The original is definitely superior but this has its own merits for sure, it’s certainly worth watching and it’s something I definitely see myself revisiting.
