i love stopmotion so much. so so much. the stories themselves were also quite good sometimes. like, what does the transition towards having middle-class comforts look like from the present (answer: apparently quite a lot like when chihiro's parents got hungry); what did it do to us to start regarding our homes as financial assets; and what does it mean now to hold on to a "property" when the water is rising and no one can afford rent? i wasn't really blown away but i do think this was worth the time it took to watch. also i really loved that it was stopmotion.

suspense makes you feel through your eyes. distance is tangible, weighty. details have an abrasive texture (what if that's a clue? a trap? eyes get caught like skin on sandstone). diabolique navigates this brilliantly — the ways of seeing, the eyes that see, all arranged in the shadowy and unfixed geometry of a love triangle. this was the film at its strongest for me. so when the lines of sight were resolved, when they were aligned behind the objective lens, i ended up feeling like i had lost something.
