Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Hunt for the Wilderpeople ★★★★

A bizarre but strangely wonderful little film. Definitely glad I chose to see this instead of Suicide Squad.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople finds its focus in the relationship between its two main characters. These two, played by newcomer Julian Dennison and the great Sam Neill, have wonderful chemistry and make the fairly simplistic plot feel both original and exciting. Sam Neill is especially a highlight, and is always magnetic to watch on screen.

Another great aspect of Hunt for the Wilderpeople is Taika Waititi's direction. He uses an idiosyncratic shot composition that at times is very reminiscent of Wes Anderson, but still remains a unique style in itself. He makes the film into this joyous and strange mess that never ceases to entertain. Plus, he showcases the beauty of New Zealand in ways that haven't been seen since The Lord of the Rings.

All in all, I highly suggest Hunt for the Wilderpeople to anyone. I think there's something to enjoy for everyone in this film. It's funny, meaningful, creative, and entertaining. It may not be groundbreaking by any means, but honestly, it doesn't really need to be.
