Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom ★★★½

I really liked this film. It has got some great direction for an adaptation and does keep its pacing nicely. It’s also a telling story about the push and pull between artistry and industry in the music biz. The performances are remarkable from the entire crew, especially Bozeman. This is not really a narrative-driven film, but is a day in the life of a recording artist and band. The conversations are all great, and I think the writing shines most in the stories told. I feel it sometimes does get a little too overwrought in its messaging about how the business side works, but it’s also an important aspect of history, and is relevant looking at artists now, in cases like Taylor Swift vs Scooter Braun. I think the film is also a bit tonally uneven, but these are hot times, where emotions are running in all ways. I’m sitting this one at 3.5/5 I think it’s very good, and I would definitely recommend checking it out.
