A potent metaphor for white flight paranoia, this is equal parts entertaining and genuinely disturbing, with great low-light cinematography, inspired set designs and Carpenter's most self-assured and arguably most satisfying score.
Bonus points for Isaac Hayes' chandelier-equipped low rider, maybe the greatest car in cinema.
