  After finding The Bird with the Crystal Plumage and Blood and Black Lace somewhat dry and unpleasant, lacking in human interest to make the (excellent) craft feel meaningful, it was a delightful surprise to find out how warm Deep Red is (I watched the longer Italian cut, which I gather is more indulgent and character-centric). The film does a tremendous job of blending the giallo elements with scenes between Hemmings' Marcus and Nicolodi's Gianna that border on screwball comedy. Both…

  Genuinely not sure what people see in this, beyond the soundtrack, the high production values and the, like, three good episodes. To be fair, those three episodes, 'Asteroid Blues', 'The Ballad of Fallen Angels', and 'Pierrot Le Fou', are well-crafted, cleverly stylised little vignettes, each deserving of a place in the Anime Hall of Fame.

  But jeez, the rest of the series does not live up to those episodes, nor do justice to the soundtrack. There are some fun episodes…
