Call of the Flesh

Call of the Flesh ★★★

A young woman who has spent the last 7 years in a convent, runs away the night before taking her vows to god to go searching for a singer (Novarro) that she listens to from behind the convent walls. She meets him and they fall in love, but when her brother convinces the singer that taking her from God would damn her to hell, he agrees to break her heart to send her back to the convent, breaking his own heart in the process. There's some really nice stuff here, and Novarro is really great in the lead and as a singer in most of the songs. Renee Adoree is a vamp love interest in her final film role before retiring from acting. However, the film is kind of long for the story, with arguably too much singing scenes that drag on, and not enough drama behind her leaving the convent. It's a bit of a slog to get through, but it's entertaining.
