    From the dazzling black and white cinematography to the intense themes of romance and the male gaze, L'Avventura smashes the silver screen and crosses a line where films are so emotionally intense that it barely even feels scripted. The main player here is Monica Vitti, who is just as gorgeous and graceful as a swan, the way she glides from scene to scene, occasionally glancing at herself in the mirror (even though she really doesn't need to because, I mean, just look at her), with such elegance. You know she controls the screen.

    Agh. Masterpiece.

    An impeccable, fully developed, creative, fun, funny, beautiful, moving film littered with Gilliam's trademark dry British humor and covered with a layer of satire so thick you'd need a pickaxe to dig through it.
